On 16 July, Emtel announced that it had been recognised as the fastest mobile network in East Africa, and therefore in Mauritius, for the first and second quarters of 2024 by Ookla. Ookla is the world leader in fixed and mobile broadband network analysis. This double distinction is a first for both Emtel and Mauritius. Mauritius is actually moving up the world rankings in terms of digital infrastructure.
The Speedtest Award for the best providers in terms of speed is determined using a ‘Speed Score’ which incorporates a measurement of each provider’s download and upload speeds. To award this prize, Ookla analysed the tests initiated by consumers on ‘Speedtest’ for the country’s main operators. The results of Ookla’s analysis confirm that Emtel achieved the fastest overall mobile speeds in Mauritius during the first two quarters of 2024, placing Mauritius in 38th position worldwide according to the Speedtest Global Index. ‘We are deeply honoured to be recognised by Ookla as the fastest mobile network in East Africa. This has been made possible by our 5G network rolled out in 2022 which covers most of the population in Mauritius,’ said Kresh Goomany, CEO of Emtel.
Last December, Emtel announced that it was able to offer a 5G mobile connection to 78% of the population.
