The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) has been recognised as an accredited regional entity for the Green Climate Fund*, a major step forward in terms of access to climate financing for IOC member states and, more broadly, for the islands of Africa. The Commission will now be able to submit adaptation and mitigation projects of up to USD 50 million to the institution in Incheon (South Korea).
COI accreditation therefore paves the way for the formulation of new climate projects with a high environmental impact in the following areas: health, food security, water management, community livelihoods, sustainable energy, transport and resilient infrastructure, ecosystem services, among others. CVF funding will also support climate cooperation and early warning systems.
The IOC is one of the few intergovernmental organisations in Africa to be accredited by the FVC. This accreditation is the result of the ongoing process of capacity building and institutional transformation undertaken by the IOC in accordance with the guidelines of its Strategic Development Plan 2023-2033, with additional support from the French Development Agency and the European Union.
This recognition also makes the IOC a benchmark organisation for supporting its member states in meeting their commitments to combat climate change. The IOC could also become the preferred accredited entity for all the islands of Africa brought together within the Commission of African Island States, which benefits from the support of the IOC.
