On April 17, Benito Elisa – founder and director of Wakanda 4.0 – held a press conference surrounded by his partners to announce the organization of the Cryptoverse Summit on May 17 at the Intercontinental Resort in Balaclava. With the Cyptoverse Summit, Benito Elisa intends to promote Mauritius internationally as a favorable and safe jurisdiction for virtual assets.
The first edition organized in May 2022 was limited by the restrictions imposed by covid-19. This second edition has high ambitions. Benito Elisa hopes to quickly reach the figure of 200 registered participants in person and 150 on the dedicated online platform. Benito Elisa, who through Wakanda 4.0 is a committed player in the Mauritian fintech industry, explicitly states that the aim of this summit is to promote Mauritius as a favorable and safe business environment for virtual assets.
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) defines virtual assets (cryptoassets) as any digital representation of value that can be exchanged, transferred or used for payment in a digital manner. The so-called NFTs (nonfungible tokens) or other digital securities and cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are virtual assets.
A regulatory framework in place for virtual assets.
Mauritius enacted legislation in 2021, the Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offering Services (VAITOS) Act, which allows companies to obtain an operating license for activities related to the management, trading or issuance of, among other things, virtual assets. It is now time for the country to promote its new regulatory framework in order to attract or make emerge the actors of this new globalized and high growth economic activity. This is the role that the Cryptoverse Summit wants to play.
To this end, several types of global players will participate in the conference: specialized lawyers, experts in virtual assets and representatives of the World Metaverse Council, among others. The Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mahen Seeruttun will be the guest of honor.
A number of key partners have also joined the event, in order to better prepare the players for this new industry. ACCA Mauritius, a branch of the global professional accountancy body, as well as the law firm Lex Frontier – representative of the international network Alliott Global Alliance -, MPMX Holdings Ltd (“Golar Token”) and Ashton Financial Partners are the co-sponsors of this event which is meant to be global while being well and truly anchored in Mauritius
