On Wednesday, January 20, a collection of marine litter took place around the M’Bouzi island, opposite Mamoudzou (Grande Terre).
Organised jointly by the Marine Natural Park, the Scientific Diving Service and the Mayotte Ocean Club, 26 bags of 200 liters were collected in barely 3 hours.
In these bags, exactly 230 kg of various waste were brought to the surface with, in detail: 94 kg of plastic waste, 90 kg of metals (especially cans) and another 28 kg of a little everything (clothes, medical waste…). In addition to this list at the Prévert, the traditional tires, TV set or foam mattresses.
Which gives a nice sample of what lies underwater near an urban area plagued by overcrowding and saturation of waste collection services.
