The creation of biodiversity agencies is planned in the two French departments of Mayotte and Reunion. It was at the end of the third conference on climate and biodiversity, organised by the Réunion Region on December 8 by video-conference and on social networks, that the creations were confirmed.
The reflection on the creation of the ARB in Mayotte dates back to 2016 and the starting point of its foreshadowing in April 2019 with the signing of the agreement between the Departmental Council of Mayotte, the French Biodiversity Agency (AFB) and the state. The objectives of the ARBs are to strengthen policies in favour of the environment and the conservation of biodiversity, but also to involve and mobilise all the players in these themes. Mohamed Issouf, project manager for the foreshadowing of ARB Mayotte, was able to present the methodology put in place by the Department of Mayotte for the creation of this agency, which should be created in the third half of 2021. biodiversity were created with the 2016 biodiversity law, there are currently 8 at the national level. These tools allow regions to innovate in the implementation of their public policies, in conjunction with the French Biodiversity Office *, by giving them more leeway for the development of local initiatives. In French overseas territories, three ARBs are being created: Guadeloupe, Réunion and Mayotte.

* The French Biodiversity Office is a public body of the State which contributes to the monitoring, preservation, management and restoration of biodiversity as well as to the balanced and sustainable management of water. The Office results from the merger, on January 1, 2020, of the French Agency for Biodiversity (AFB) and the National Hunting and Wildlife Office (ONCFS). It also modifies the missions of the federations of hunters and has the stated objective of strengthening the environmental police.
