The concept of eco-construction or ecological construction can vary from one specialist to another. However, all agree that the aim is to favour healthy construction, using natural materials, because “a building must above all be adapted to people, the well-being of its occupants being of paramount importance”. And this was already the objective of the “ntaolo” (elders) when it came to sustainable construction.

In Madagascar, architects, town planners and construction engineers are increasingly calling on builders to stop using toxic substances in the industrial manufacture of building materials. The aim is also to use new technologies to limit the negative impact of human settlements on the environment, and to reduce the energy consumption of buildings, houses and flats. More specifically, it calls for improved thermal insulation and more responsible construction techniques.
