Mauritian cement manufacturer Gamma and Indonesian cement industrial group Cemindo Gemilang have acquired Cementis Madagascar, which is now known as Alpha Ciment. The acquisition is worth some US$100 million.
Following this strategic acquisition, Alpha Ciment’s management has identified a number of priorities. In addition to modernising its main plant and production techniques, “Alpha Ciment’s vision is to support sustainable growth”, according to the press release.
This will require the involvement and participation of existing human resources, additional skills development and substantial investment.
According to our sources, the priority is to reduce Madagascar’s cement imports by increasing production to 1 million tonnes a year (compared with less than 500,000 tonnes last year).
Around 800,000 tonnes of cement were imported into the Big Island in 2023.
Other countries in the region are targeted for export.
Commenting on this strategic acquisition, Tommy Ah Teck, Executive Chairman of Gamma, confirms that “between Cemindo and Gamma, we have the experience, technical and financial capacity to accelerate the implementation of development projects in Madagascar”. He also added that “this acquisition is part of our expansion strategy and our commitment to delivering exceptional value to all our stakeholders”. From Madagascar, Alpha Ciment S.A. aims to export to other countries in the region, including Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya.
A key player in the construction, roadworks and civil engineering sectors, as well as in the aggregates market, among others, the Gamma Group, which is listed on the Mauritius stock exchange, is a diversified company with more than 35 years’ presence and expertise in the manufacture of construction materials in the Mauritian economic landscape.
Cemindo Gemilang is an industrial cement group based in Indonesia that produces 15 million tonnes of cement and 10 million tonnes of clinker a year. With its plants in Indonesia and a unit in Vietnam, the group has considerable technical expertise.
