According to the press release sent to our editors: “The Indian Ocean Marine Life Foundation and its president René Heuzey are delighted to announce the birth of a baby sperm whale just a few hours after the launch of the Foundation for the Study and Protection of Mammals in the Indian Ocean on March 24.
This female baby will be named Varuna, Hindu god of the oceans and rain. René Heuzey and the honorary president of the foundation, oceanographer and scientific advisor François Sarano both confirm that this baby sperm whale is a female.
Beautiful baby of almost 3 meters and more than 300 kilos, Varuna is the daughter of Lucy, and her grandmother is Dos Calleux, one of the heroines of René Heuzey’s film “Sperm whales, a family story”.
